It probably hasn't escaped your notice that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when the world comes together to raise awareness, share stories, and support the millions of people whose lives have been impacted by a breast cancer diagnosis.
This year’s global theme, “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters”, is a strong reminder that behind every diagnosis is a person, a mother, sister, daughter, partner, or friend who is navigating their own unique path through the difficult and frightening journey.
But we also know that, for people who are newly diagnosed, going through treatment, or in recovery, the noise of October can sometimes feel overwhelming. The pink ribbons, the campaigns, and the constant reminders (while incredibly important) can be hard to take in when you’re simply trying to get through each day.
That’s why at The House of Hope, we’re choosing a slightly different path this month.
We wholeheartedly support Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the amazing work that charities and organisations are doing. But instead of making a lot of noise, we are focusing on what we do best, which is creating a calm, safe, and supportive space for the breast cancer community here in Scotland. As we are newly opened, our focus is on raising awareness of what we do so we can provide support to every person who needs it, and we're calling for our supporters to make Breast Cancer Awareness Month matter by helping us spread the word.
The House of Hope is here every week, every month, to provide wellbeing services, support and connection to those with a breast cancer diagnosis, and also to their loved ones. Because we know every journey is different, and every person needs support in their own way.
This October, as always, we’ll continue to offer a range of support services, including:
Yoga, pilates, aromatherapy and oncology massage to restore the body
A community choir, drop-ins, cuppas and chats to build our community and help them feel more connected
Macmillan support and wellbeing workshops to help improve the cancer journey
Personalised bra fittings and self-checking workshops to empower and build confidence
Mental health workshops to strengthen resilience
And of course, this month also marks a special milestone! We will host the official opening of The House of Hope, following our soft launch earlier this year.
Our mission this October isn’t to add to the noise. It’s to reach more people impacted by breast cancer across Scotland so that we can extend our vital services and support to them. We'll also be sharing some wonderful resources from other charities and organisations that can help people navigate the journey more easily.
We are here for the quiet moments. The tough days. The need for a listening ear. And the small steps forward that matter so much on this journey.
At The House of Hope, we believe that while every story is unique, no one should have to go through breast cancer alone.
